Cher, 74, put Cruise, now 57, on her list of top five lovers of all time.
Cher and Tom Cruise got it going on the ‘80s but did you know that their romance began... in the White House? In a 2018 interview with the Daily Mail, Cher revealed that the two initially met at Sean Penn and Madonna’s wedding in 1985. But the icon said that a shared learning disability was what reunited them again. “Then a bunch of people who were dyslexic were invited to the White House, and Tom and I are both dyslexic,” she told the publication. Cruise was 22 years old at the time and Cher was 16 years his senior. While nothing "happened" at the White House Cher admitted, "We didn’t go out till way later, but there definitely was a connection there. "The two met at the White House to claim an Outstanding Learning Disabled Achiever Award from First Lady Nancy Reagan, reports InStyle.

Cher, 74, was confused as to how Cruise, now 57, approached their relationship which was so private when compared to his relationship with Katie Holmes that he shouted from the rooftops. In 2008 she told Entertainment Tonight, “It was a long, long time ago and neither one of us ever talked about it and I don’t know why. When we were together he was such a private person. He always has been until lately. He didn’t mention it and I didn’t mention it. I loved him though, he was amazing. Now it’s hard for me to look at this person and this press. How many times can I watch him jumping up and down on Oprah’s couch?”
At the time of The Daily Mail interview she admitted that the two were still cordial. However she couldn't wrap her head around his current religion. When asked if they were friends, she said, "Yeah! Though I don’t get what he does, that whole Scientology thing. I can’t understand it so I just… don’t," she shrugged. According to E! News Andy Cohen asked the "Believe" singer who was her "all-time best lover" on Watch What Happens Live. Cher took some time to answer. "Well, a lot of 'em kinda came in first," she paused for another moment. "I've had just the greatest lovers ever." Andy persisted, "Where did Tom Cruise [who Cher dated briefly in the '80s] rank on that list?" "Well, he was in the top five!" she answered.
On a segment of the show called Cher's Gypsies, Tramps and Tea she was prodded to answer more questions about the Mission Impossible star. "Aw," she said when his picture came up on the screen. "Well, he wasn't a Scientologist then!" Cohen asked if the duo had "a hot and heavy relationship," to which Cher replied, "Well, it was pretty hot and heavy for a little minute." "But he's also a great guy," she clarified. "The person that I knew was a great, lovable guy."
InStyle reports that Cher told ET that they split due to conflicting schedules. “It was after Risky Business and right before The Color of Money. I couldn’t go to Chicago and that was kind of the straw that broke the camel’s back,” she explained. The Color of Money began shooting in Chicago in January of 1986 — Cruise and Cher’s White House rendezvous had happened in October, 1985. Cher has also spoken about Cruise during an interview with Oprah in 2008. “I was so crazy about him,” she confessed to the talk show host. She said that "he was so wonderful … And he was so, like, different. He was a shy boy" She also said that he didn't have money at the time and he told her that nobody would talk to him when he was in school. "I was crazy about him,” she reiterated. Cher did not reveal the exact duration of their relationship but, she did say that the date was quite a "long date".
According to The Sun, In the Spill Your Guts segment on The Late Late Show with James Corden, Cher refused to reveal who her top 5 lovers were. The superstar stayed mum, opting to consume a dried caterpillar instead of answering the question. She confessed, "I don't even remember saying that." However, when asked by James if she remembered doing it, she responded affirmatively, "Yes." Apart from Cruise, the icon has been linked to Val Kilmer, Gene Simmons, Warren Beatty, Eric Clapton, Michael Bolton and Tommy Lee to name a few. When Entertainment Tonight spoke to Cher in 2017, she revealed what kind of man she’s looking for. "It takes kind of a special person," she told ET's Nancy O'Dell. "There are few people. It kind of cuts the herd down, because people are a little bit frightened about being Mr. Cher. It takes a certain kind of guy."
