Elizabeth Mitchell To Reprise Her Mrs. Claus Role For 'The Santa Clause'

In the upcoming series, 'Scott Calvin is on the brink of his 65th birthday and realizing that he can't be Santa forever.'

Fans of The Santa Clause franchise have a lot to be merry about this year. Earlier this month, Disney+ announced that Tim Allen will once again be suiting up as North Pole royalty for his role of reluctant Santa, Scott Calvin, in a new limited series for the streamer. Even as fans were celebrating this incredible news, last week Deadline brought forward yet another bit of exciting casting report: Elizabeth Mitchell will also return to the world of The Santa Clause to reprise her role as Scott's wife, Carol Calvin aka Mrs. Claus.

Mitchell first appeared in the series in the 2002 American Christmas comedy The Santa Clause 2, which followed Scott—now Santa Claus—on his mission to find a suitable Mrs. Claus in order to protect his position as the jolly St. Nick. The actress played the role of Carol, Scott's son Charlie's principal at school, and ended the movie as Father Christmas' better half. Mitchell reprised the role in 2006 for the third film in the series, The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause, where Santa deals with a conniving Jack Frost played by Martin Short.

According to ET Canada, the synopsis for the new series—tentatively titled The Santa Clause—reads: "In the Disney+ series, Scott Calvin is on the brink of his 65th birthday and realizing that he can't be Santa forever. He's starting to lose a step in his Santa duties, and more importantly, he's got a family who could benefit from a life in the normal world, especially his two kids who have grown up at the Pole. With a lot of elves, children, and family to please, Scott sets out to find a suitable replacement Santa while preparing his family for a new adventure in a life south of the pole."

In addition to reprising his beloved role from the holiday trilogy, Allen will reportedly also be executive producer of the upcoming series. Meanwhile, Jack Burditt—whose credits include 30 Rock, Modern Family, Frasier, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, and the Tim Allen-led comedy series Last Man Standing—will serve as executive producer and showrunner. Kevin Hench, also of Last Man Standing, will executive-produce as well, alongside Richard Baker and Rick Messina. The new series is a 20th Century Television production, which is a part of Disney Television Studios. Production on the series is set to begin in March and will take place in Los Angeles, California.

The upcoming series is not Mitchell's first go at television acting. She is perhaps best known for her roles on ABC's Lost and Once Upon a Time, and NBC's Revolution. The 51-year-old also recurs on the second season of Netflix's Outer Banks and is currently set as a lead in the streamer's upcoming vampire drama First Kill produced by Emma Roberts. She recently joined Ellen Burstyn, James Caan, and Ann-Margret in Queen Bees and also starred in and produced the SXSW indie feature, Witch Hunt. Mitchell is repped by Link Entertainment and APA.

Meanwhile, Allen is known for voicing Buzz Lightyear in the Toy Story films and for his starring role in the hit ABC sitcom Home Improvement. In Burditt's long-running Last Man Standing television series, he starred as the Baxter family patriarch, Mike Baxter, a father of three daughters who struggles to assert his masculinity in a home where he is outnumbered. Allen's other film roles include Galaxy Quest, Wild Hogs, Jungle 2 Jungle, and The Shaggy Dog. While a release date for The Santa Clause series hasn't yet been set, you can catch up on the franchise by streaming the original trilogy exclusively on Disney+.
