Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris Shares Her Thanksgiving Cornbread Dressing Recipe

Harris hopes those who are not with their families this Thanksgiving can find a little comfort in the kitchen.

Vice President-elect Kamala Harris is not only a badass politician she's also got mad skills when it comes to cooking. The 56-year-old is becoming known for her prowess in the kitchen. A resurfaced video trending on TikTok has reminded fans that not only does Harris know how to deliver a speech, but she's also got a passion for cooking. According to Insider,  back in 2019, The Washington Post's Jonathan Capehart asked then-Sen. Harris about her method for brining a turkey. Harris broke down her best brining tips. While the video was uploaded on Twitter initially, it's now making a comeback on TikTok. Now, Abbi (@feministmama on TikTok) made a variation of the recipe where her video raked in 6.6 million views. She wrote in her caption that this turned out to be the best turkey she's ever made.



 

 

Harris talks about both wet brine and dry brine methods. Her wet brine method includes a pot of water, bay leaves, sugar, peppercorns, and sliced citrus like oranges. For the dry-brine she instructed Capehart to mix salt and pepper together and spread it all over the bird. "Just like lather that baby up on the outside and in the cavity," she said. Twitter users loved how down-to-earth the former Senator is and how well she knew her way around cooking techniques.



 

 

More recently, Harris took to Twitter to share her mouthwatering cornbread dressing recipe just in time for Thanksgiving. Harris addressed how hard the year has been for Americans. Like many others, she also turned to cook to cope during this difficult time, and hopes that by her sharing her family recipe, it can provide comfort to those who aren't able to be with their families. She wrote: During difficult times I have always turned to cooking. This year, I wanted to share one of my family’s favorite Thanksgiving recipes with you. I hope whenever you’re able to make it in life, it brings you as much warmth as it has brought me—even when separated from those I love.

Here's what you'll need:

Ingredients:

2 8oz packages of cornbread mix 
1 pound spicy pork sausage 
2 onions, chopped 
2 apples, cored and chopped 
4 celery stalks, diced 
¾ cup of chicken broth 
¼ cup unsalted butter, melted 
¼ cup fresh parsley, chopped 
2 tsp sage 
½ tsp thyme 
½ tsp rosemary 
salt & pepper to taste

The yummy-sounding recipe brings together things like sweet and hearty cornbread mix, spicy sausage, sweet apples, combined with spices like sage, thyme, and rosemary. It's an easy recipe that only uses about a dozen ingredients, so even if you're an amateur you can give this recipe a shot. Cooking has been a passion for the politician ever since she was just a little girl watching her mom in the kitchen. "As a child, I remember hearing the pots and smelling the food, and kind of like someone in a trance, I would walk into the kitchen to see all this incredible stuff happening," Harris told Glamour. "My mother used to tell me, 'Kamala, you clearly like to eat good food. You better learn how to cook.'" Now, it's become a meditative tool. "One of the things that I do to relax at the end of the day is I read recipes," she told The Cut in 2018. "I have a whole collection of cookbooks, so if I’m at home, I read them. It could be Marcella Hazan or Alice Waters. Sometimes I just do the New York Times cooking app if I'm on the road, or I try to get past the paywall on Bon Appétit." She also said, "If I’m cooking, I feel like I’m in control of my life."
