The mom shared on TikTok that she wants her kids to get a job at 16 and start paying rent.
Raising kids is no easy feat and parents try to develop their own ways of doing things. While there's no blueprint for perfect parenting, people are trying out different things to see what works best for their family and not everyone might agree with it. TikTok user, Fawna (@tru_n8v) sparked a debate after she revealed her set of rules for her children on the social media platform.
Fawna began the video by sharing her parenting rules “that not everyone agrees with.” "I might lose some followers and probably get some hate but you know, it is what it is,” she said first addressing the issue of swearing, ”In my house, at the age of 13, you’re allowed to cuss – as long as you use it in the proper context and you do not disrespect adults. And yes, you will say ”Ma’am” and you will say ”Sir” – you will be respectful.” She also pointed out that her kids aren’t allowed to ”bother me, talk to me, touch me, nothing” until she has finished her first cup of coffee. ”And yes, they follow that rule and yes, they’re fine,” she claimed."
I’d be swearing also if I had to pay rent at 16. 🤣— TheEmpressOfSage (@EmpressSage) March 13, 2022
Fawna also mentioned that she wants her kids to get a job at 16. They also have to get their driver’s license and “start paying rent.” Fawna clarified that she doesn't want to keep the money for herself, she just wants to make sure that her kids aren't blowing their money so that they have some cash to use when and if they decide they want to move out. “I will save it until whatever point they decide that they want to move out, I’ll return all the rent they’ve paid to me over the months or over the years and they’ll have a nice nest egg to start,” she added. “Rent while in school is only 100 a month but after graduating it's 250 because they can now work full time," she wrote later in the comments. "This will get the savings up nicely.”

Her video left the viewers divided, with some disagreeing with the rules but others wishing their parents did what Fawna did. "The only thing I PERSONALLY dont like about the rent thing is that as a parent its our job to provide for them we are supposed to save money for them [sic],” commented one user. ”I never liked the idea of parents making kids pay rent, but I like your method of giving it back to them!” said a second mother. A third chimed in offering support "Actually mostly what my husband and I planned on for our kids before we ever got pregnant.” "I agree with all, but I wouldn't start the rent until they were 18, especially if they played sports or did performing arts stuff and couldn't keep a job or they'd have to put leave of absences in during certain times of the year," another commenter pointed out. "Hm, I like the rent idea. Makes them responsible with their money," another person agreed. ”My Daughter is 14 and we let her cuss as long as she doesn’t do it excessively or disrespectfully to us,” another parent said of the swearing rule.
