This is a wearable technology that not only provides peace of mind but can also save lives while preserving the privacy and dignity of the wearer.
Taking care of someone with Alzheimer's or Dementia is a dedicated process that requires complete commitment and attention. Parents and caretakers especially have to worry about their affected loved ones wandering off on their own and getting lost. It's not always that we can place our family members on 24/7 surveillance so this cool new 'gadget' is going to solve that problem quite satisfactorily.
To ensure that such difficulties are dealt with effectively, a company has come up with a pair of smart GPS shoe insoles that will now let you track your loved ones who suffer from memory impairment. With these on your feet, you can be sure that they would never go missing or lose their way. SmartSole inserts come with a built-in tracking chip with a cellular signal, which helps you track your loved ones at all times.
16,000 people with dementia went missing in Japan in 2017. More than 400 died before being found. More than 200 still missing. GPS SmartSole could locate each of these individuals within minutes. We need to use available technology. #gpssmartsolehttps://t.co/e2c9CX2sF6— Andrew Carle (@AndrewJCarle) June 14, 2018
According to the company's website, these smart insoles slip into an individual's shoe, just like any other insole would. "This system capitalizes on procedural memory," the website explains, "which means even those with advanced memory disorders typically remember to wear shoes!"
These insoles are said to come in three sizes, but can also be trimmed down to fit a wearer's specific foot size. The large can be trimmed to fit men's sizes 15-12, the medium women's 14-10, and the small kid's 4-3. They also mention that they specifically created these insoles for young adults & teens with Autism / Developmental Disabilities, and seniors suffering from Alzheimer's / Dementia.
The website also reads, "This is wearable technology that not only provides peace of mind but can also save lives while preserving the privacy and dignity of the wearer." Other tracking devices, such as bracelets, are more obvious and visible, which results in a whole host of concerns. These insoles, on the other hand, are completely hidden and undetectable.
Once their shoes have been inserted with the insoles, you can start tracking them using a smartphone, computer, or tablet. The website says the insoles are noticeably thicker than normal shoe inserts but their research has found no indication that this added thickness was uncomfortable by any means. They explain that these insoles remove the stigma, shame, and anxiety that other crude tracking methods may have on someone with memory impairment.
The inserts come with an option of two plans if you wish to purchase them, similar to that of cell phones. These trackers also require a data plan for connectivity. The device itself costs $299, with monthly service costs varying depending on what plan you opt for. You can check out the different packages and more here.
